About this meeting
We had a great turnout for our February Side Project Society meetup at the Improving Houston office!
Guest speaker, founder Kaleb Smith, shared his journey building his startup Player 3, a social network and marketplace that centralizes community, content, and support for gaming creators. It was a candid look at what it really takes to build a startup, focusing on the iterative reality behind the scenes.
Key takeaways from his talk included:
-
Progress comes from iteration, not perfection: Kaleb emphasized that early ideas rarely survive unchanged. Real progress happens by putting things out into the world, learning from feedback, and continuously refining. Waiting for the “perfect” version often slows momentum more than it helps.
-
Uncertainty is part of the process: Building a startup means making decisions without having all the answers. Kaleb spoke openly about taking calculated risks, feeling unsure at times, and still choosing to move forward. Discomfort isn’t a sign of failure; it’s often a sign you’re doing meaningful work.
-
Stay close to users and real feedback: One recurring theme was the importance of listening. Assumptions only get you so far. Paying attention to how people actually use your product and what they struggle with leads to better decisions than building in isolation.
-
Consistency compounds over time: Small, steady effort mattered more than big bursts of activity. Kaleb highlighted how showing up consistently, even when progress felt slow, created momentum that eventually added up in meaningful ways.
