July 2025
About this meeting
Our July meetup brought together a great mix of new and returning members for a session focused on local discovery and community building. Members shared updates, met new faces, and enjoyed an inspiring look at a homegrown Houston project.
Founders Luan Nguyen and Asad Ali walked us through the journey of building Houston Spotlight and shared what they’ve learned while growing a community-first platform for discovering local events. Their story highlighted the realities of bootstrapping, iterating fast, and solving a problem they personally felt.
Key takeaways from their talk included:
- Identify a real problem worth solving: They built Houston Spotlight after realizing there was no centralized, authentic hub for niche Houston events.
- Create value by curating what others overlook: The platform surfaces hyper-local events, small businesses, creatives, and foodie deals that bigger platforms miss.
- Track traction to validate your direction: Early wins include 100+ curated events, ~200 monthly active users, and a newsletter with strong engagement.
- Stay scrappy through early-stage challenges: Balancing full-time jobs, manually gathering events, and competing with algorithm-driven platforms pushed them to adapt quickly.
- Iterate publicly and evolve fast: Their timeline includes multiple versions — from Instagram posts → v1.0 → v2.0 → and now automated event ingestion.
- Improve based on real user needs: They’re enhancing UX, expanding features, streamlining automation, and attending local events to grow community presence.
- Build features that deepen engagement: Future plans include automated scraping, user-submitted events, reviews, and other community-driven discovery tools.
Luan and Asad’s story showed how much impact you can create by building for your own city and listening closely to the people you serve. The community left inspired to chase their own ideas and excited to see what Houston Spotlight does next. 🚀
